Description: Program Overview: The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Office of Grants & Research (OGR) is responsible for administering the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) Program, a grant program originating from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The Byrne JAG Program is authorized by the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended, and is designed to provide seed money to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on local needs and conditions. Priority Areas for Massachusetts: Applicants may submit proposals to continue most recently Byrne-funded activities or a portion of most recently-funded activities related to any of the 29 allowable purpose areas. Preference will be given to direct prevention or intervention programs that address the Massachusetts funding priorities below and that replicate evidence-based programs. • Reentry – Adult and juvenile reentry programs that improve community safety and reduce recidivism. • Youth Violence -- Programs that improve community safety by reducing gang and youth violence, juvenile delinquency, and related gang activities, including education, prevention, intervention and enforcement programs. • Drugs -- Programs that improve community safety by decreasing the demand for, or availability of illegal drugs. Education, prevention, treatment, and enforcement programs would be eligible. • Alcohol Abuse – Programs that improve community safety by decreasing the abuse of alcohol, particular for the underage population. Education, prevention, treatment, and enforcement programs would be eligible. • Sexual Assault – Programs that improve community safety and provide services to victims of sexual assault. Education, prevention, investigative, and treatment programs would be eligible. • Domestic Violence – Programs that improve community safety and provide services to victims of domestic violence. Education, prevention, investigative, and treatment programs would be eligible. • Information Technology -- Programs that increase community safety, and/or enhance the criminal justice system through increased efficiency, information sharing, access to tools, or distance learning. • Programs or initiatives aimed at improving community safety or enhancing the criminal justice system through targeted research and analysis, development of best practices, creation of policies and procedures, or promoting effective collaborations. • Sex Offenders -- Programs that increase community safety through enhanced data collection, registration, information sharing, monitoring, treatment, education or enforcement.
