Description: Overview:
The Division of Traffic Safety (DTS) is currently planning for the fiscal year 2013 (FY 2013) Illinois Highway Safety Program which begins July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. The overall goal of the program is to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries associated with traffic crashes by implementing appropriate traffic safety countermeasures. We encourage your agency to participate and invite you to submit proposals for consideration for the federally-funded Section 402 and/or Section 410 programs.
Section 402
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified nine emphasis areas as those which offer the greatest opportunity for reducing highway deaths and injuries. They include:
- Impaired Driving Countermeasures
- Occupant Protection
- Speed Control
- Police Traffic Services
- Emergency Medical Services
- Traffic Records
- Motorcycle Safety
- Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
- Roadway Safety
These are not in priority order, only suggested emphasis areas. However DTS is interested in:
- Impaired driving programs designed to reduce the total number of fatalities in crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of 0.08 or higher.
- Occupant protection programs designed to increase safety belt usage to 100 percent.
- Motorcycle programs designed to reduce motorcycle fatalities on our roadways.
Section 410
The Alcohol Highway Safety Program provides funding for agencies to conduct innovative alcohol countermeasures in the following categories:
- High-Visibility Enforcement
- Prosecution and Adjudication Outreach
- BAC Testing
- High-Risk Drivers
- Alcohol Rehabilitation or DWI Court
- Underage Drinking Prevention
- Administrative License Suspension or Revocation System
- Self-Sustaining Impaired Driving Prevention
