Description: The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), in partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), announced the open application period for the Drug Market Intervention (DMI) Initiative. Supported through Project Safe Neighborhoods, the DMI Initiative addresses the challenges communities face when responding to illegal drug markets and their associated crime, violence, and disorder. Based on the High Point model, DMI is a strategic problem-solving initiative that aims to permanently close open-air drug markets through deterrence and intervention, targeting and prosecuting the most violent offenders to demonstrate consequences, and providing training, vocational, and social service resources to low-level offenders in an effort to rehabilitate drug-overrun neighborhoods. Through DMI, communities implement the High Point model, tailoring the strategies to fit their population's needs, foster relationships with important community members to ensure the program's sustainability, and participate in an evaluation study conducted by the National Institute of Justice. Communities interested in becoming a target site can visit http://drugmarketinitiative.msu.edu/DMI%20RFC_RoundIII.pdf for a detailed description of responsibilities and application requirements. Applications must be submitted electronically. Applications to participate in the DMI Initiative are due September 24, 2010. Please note, this application is for technical assistance and training ONLY. No grant funds will be awarded to selected teams.
